My experience

I’ve worked in the historic garden sector for 30 years, I’m a chartered member and fellow of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture.

For 15 years I have overseen the regeneration of the garden and landscape at Trentham Gardens and Estate, increasing visitor numbers from 100k to 750k+ per year, making it the UK’s 4th most visited pay for entry garden, and winning BBC Countryfile “Garden of the Year Award”.  Prior to this, I was Gardens Manager for Lord Rothschild at Waddesdon Manor for 9 years.

I have experience of realising the schemes of world-class garden and landscape designers including Tom Stuart-Smith (multi award-winning Chelsea Flower Show designer), Piet Oudolf (New York High Line), Professor Nigel Dunnett (London 2012 Olympic Park landscape designer), David Hicks (garden designer), and Oscar de la Renta (international fashion designer).

I am a highly-respected and experienced gardens consultant offering specialist landscape and gardens management and business expertise.  I have extensive experience in professional horticulture and gardening, including management of gardens teams, curatorship of historic and botanic gardens, landscapes, the enhancement of visitor experience.and the commercial development and management of gardens open to the public.

I have a reputation for developing award-winning results, generating growth, and delivering very high standards in a demanding and often competitive situation. I do so by supporting people to work together to jointly understand and develop the asset of the garden, integrated into the place as a whole.

My experience

Growing up in a horticultural family, it was almost inevitable that I would develop a love of gardens from an early age. Surrounded by plants, landscapes, and the people who created them, I knew from a young age that horticulture would be my lifelong career.

I have now worked in the horticultural industry for over 12 years, beginning my career with a Level 2 Horticulture Apprenticeship at Writtle College. It was during this time that I discovered my passion not only for plants, but for creating beautiful, well-balanced gardens that can be enjoyed for generations.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work in a number of exceptional private gardens, primarily across North Essex and Suffolk. From developing newly designed landscapes to maintaining established estates, these opportunities have allowed me to build extensive practical experience, strengthen my plant knowledge, and develop a keen eye for garden design.

My philosophy is simple: let the planting do the talking. I believe the most memorable gardens are those where thoughtful planting creates beauty, structure, and interest throughout the seasons. Every garden has its own character, and I enjoy helping to create and care for landscapes that reflect the vision of their owners while standing the test of time.

I believe that successful gardens are built on passionate people. Whether creating a new landscape or maintaining an established one, I have always valued teamwork, attention to detail and building lasting relationships. These are the same principles I bring to every client and candidate I work with today.

Over the years I have worked across private estates, country houses and high-end domestic gardens, gaining experience in garden development, restoration, planting design and the ongoing care of mature landscapes.

Having worked as a professional gardener myself, I understand first-hand the challenges, expectations and rewards of the profession. That practical experience enables me to connect with both clients and candidates on a level that only comes from having done the job.

My experience working within private gardens has given me a genuine understanding of what both employers and gardeners are looking for. I know the importance of finding not only the right skills and experience, but also the right personality and long-term fit. This practical knowledge allows me to support our clients and candidates with honest advice and a personal approach throughout the recruitment process.

Today, as Partner at National Gardens Specialist, I combine my practical horticultural background with a genuine passion for people, helping connect talented gardeners with some of the finest private estates, historic gardens, and botanical collections across the UK and beyond.
